Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai, Thailand
This wat offers some beautiful images of Buddha and is a peaceful experience. It didn't have the large amount of foot traffic some others had and made it easy to bask in the spiritual aspect of the temple.
There is literally no point going to Chiang Mia without going to visit this iconic temple. Stood a top the Mount Suthep (Doi Suthep) this beautiful temple is large and spiritual.
I have been here twice. The first time was 2010 and then again in 2014. I will be honest - it is incredible but as time has gone by it's beauty, like most beautiful things, has been sold and commercialised. There are at least 4 times as many "shops" lining the street and stairs leading up to the main temple.
Accepting this mild annoyance, the visit is still awesome and I definitely recommend it. Just try and go EARLY in the morning and not during peak times.
Expect to remove your shoes and foreigners must pay to get in. I think it was 200Baht.
You can get a red taxi up the mountain 800Baht, sharing will make it cheaper. Or you can can a public taxi from near the base of the mountain that will go up for 40Baht each way but you have to wait until there are 10 people which usually takes about 30 minutes.
Or you can hire a moped and you can go up yourself. I only recommend this if you are a strong rider. It's a windy road and it's shared with some adventurous drivers.
Make sure you find the inner temple where you can get blessed by a monk and received a white thread bracelet.
Take your time up there, it is beautiful.
